I have now been forced to install the bloated, slow Acrobat Reader, because my alternative reader, Foxit, will not work with the new plugin.

Not impressed.

This is a valid complaint. We will of course always be looking for a substitute technology, but after a lot of searching the FileOpen-Adobe combination was (believe it or not) the LEAST inconvenient to the user. The Foxit web site lists rights management as one of their development areas. Maybe they'll come up with something really good!
