I recently purchased NRC CD with big hopes of completing my project. But it is all doomed now for I use Acrobat 8 on Mac OS X and the fileopen plugin would not work. There is no documentation provided in the CD and I could not find Acrobat 7 for my OS. what am I to do? Wish I cud get my money back by returning NR CD.

We are sorry that you are not satisfied. However, for more than a decade the NR CD (which contains only the code, not the book) has specifically been described as an adjunct to the BOOK. The book version on the web specifically says, THIS IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR OWNING THE BOOK. Although we understand that there are many users like you -- and we like you all -- your pattern of use is exactly why our publisher is very suspicious of our putting the book on the web at all, that is, people who use the web version INSTEAD of buying the book. You are supposed to use the web version IN ADDITION to buying the book. Nothing personal, but if most postings were like this, our publisher would make us shut down the free website.

Hi Bill, Thanks for the reply. I am sorry about the language. But atleast this time I had to write the necessary module (QR Decomposition) myself.

This avoids the question of the files not opening on Mac OS X, even for people who have bought the book (a fact you handily ignored in your almost rant-like post)

Sorry, not trying to be evasive. The FileOpen folks tell us that the Acrobat 8 version of the plugin for Mac OSX will be available in a matter of days. I'd guess actually weeks, since they have been saying "days" for quite a while now!

I also have a copy -- you gave it to me...

I second the statement that these pdf aren't visible on
os/x boxes with preview, which is odd. The plugin solution
scares me, as I deliberately don't have a pdf plugin installed
to avoid astro-ph refusing me access due to _their_ plugin
policy.

Can't NR go back to the old days of serving up pdfs like
anyone else? If CUP wants to use some meta-markup
in XML that's fine, but it can presumably be converted
to standard end-user language.

Try these instructions (http://www.numerical-recipes.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1040). Maybe they will help.
