5.5.4 gives an improved hypotenuse calculation. Another alternative is to use hypot(), if your machine provides one (my Red Hat Linux does). I believe hypot() is based on "Replacing Square Roots by Pythagorean Sums" (1983) by Cleve Moler and Donald Morrison.
