A few users have had difficulty in getting the FileOpen plug-in to work with Reader 9 on Macs. Here is a user contribution that may be helpful:

I have successfully loaded the test file http://www.nrbook.com/sslpluginok.pdf
using Adobe Reader 9.1.3’s plug-in for Safari 4 in Snow Leopard.

I ran into two issues along the way:

First, the automatic FileOpen installer could not detect my
installation of Adobe Reader, so I used the “Adobe Reader 8” version
of the FileOpen plug-in, which I had to install manually by doing the
following:

0. Quit Safari and Adobe Reader 9
1. In the Finder, open /Applications/Adobe Reader 9/
2. Right-click the icon for “Adobe Reader.app” and choose “Show
Package Contents”
3. Open the “Contents” folder. Inside is the “Plug-ins” folder.
4. Place the FileOpen8.acroplugin folder inside the “Plug-ins” folder
from step 3
5. Relaunch Safari and Adobe Reader 9

Second, in Snow Leopard, most apps (including Safari) that ship with
the OS are now 64-bit. Unfortunately, the Adobe Reader 9 plug-in is
only 32-bit, but Safari runs as 64-bit by default. So to view the NR
site on Snow Leopard using Adobe Reader 9, you must do the following:

0. Quit Safari
1. In the Finder, open /Applications/Adobe Reader 9/
2. Select Adobe Reader.app and choose “File->Get Info”
3. Make sure the checkbox “Open in 32-bit mode” is selected
4. Open Safari

Otherwise, Safari will not use the Adobe Reader plug-in to view pdf
files, even if it is installed.
