Problems with Mac OSX now fixed (we think)

First of all, apologies to you Mac users who have had difficulties getting the FileOpen plug-in to work, or work conveniently. We are now hopeful that the problems are solved.

New install instructions are here (http://www.nr.com/plugin/plugin_install.html#mac). Be sure to download the new file FileOpenMacInstall.dmg using the indicated link. If you follow the instructions, you should get a working installation for Adobe Acrobat/Reader 7.0.8 (or any later version 7) or for Adobe Acrobat/Reader 8. If you have an earlier version 7 release than 7.0.8, it might also work, or you can let the Reader program upgrade itself to 7.0.8 or later.

A big advantage of upgrading to Adobe Reader 8, which is free (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html), is that it integrates seamlessly with the Safari browser, so that Numerical Recipes book pages will display in the browser window, the way you expect them to. (Alas, Firefox users will still have to save the PDF files and open them with Adobe Reader. This is because Firefox doesn't support the Adobe plugin, while FileOpen requires it.)

If you encounter problems, please post them to this thread.

Hello,

I cannot seem to install FileOpen on my Mac Pro running Leopard (and Adobe Reader 8). Downloading the dmg file and double-clicking on the installer (no browsers open) crashes my machine altogether. In the "Get info" window of the Adobe 8 application, there is no Plug-ins section (so I can't do a manual install).

Is anyone else having trouble with Leopard + Adobe 8?

I am also using Leopard (10.5.5). I did not have Acrobat Reader on this machine before so I went to download it and they are now giving out version 9.0.0. Their website says that FileOpen plugins for version 8 should still work. I installed version 9 ok and it opens normal PDF files in the Safari window. I then installed the FileOpen plugin according to the latest instructions. The first attempt to install it crashed the system. I did not use the .dmg install file again. I installed the plugin directly from the Adobe Reader plugin window and the plugin is now active on the list of plugins.

I still can not open PDF files on your site. If you need additional info, I'd be glad to send it.

I have owned the NR C 2nd Edition and the Fortran77 one before that since they were first published. I've used several routines including 2-d fft's for upward and downward continuations and reduction to the pole of large geomagnetic dataset. I've recently ordered the 3rd edition and cdrom. Thanks for timely updates - I've decided to move fully into C++ since 2001 as well.

Well,
This is really weird but it seems to be working today. Without doing anything new, I can now see Chapter 3 of the new book. It is possible that a restart is required after the installation of the Adobe Reader and plugin to get everything put in the proper place. That's the only thing I can think of that's different.

I have recently joined the forum so I couldn't reply to this thread until now. If I'd checked prior to writing my previous entry, I may not have thought it important to mention. There you go.
